The Building

The Renwick Gallery stands out as one of the most distinguished buildings in Washington. It is a perfect example of the prominent Second Empire architecture that influenced several buildings in the country back then. James Renwick Jr. designed the gallery and hence the name of the building is attributed to him. He was the architect behind other major buildings such as the Smithsonian Castle and the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

It was initially used to house the private art collection of William Wilson Corcoran, a banker and philanthropist. As the collection became larger, the gallery was shifted to another location in the street. The US Court of Claims acquired the building in 1899, and in 1972, the Smithsonian Institute restored it as a gallery for promoting American arts, crafts, and design.

Permanent Collections

Inside the Renwick Gallery is an incredible collection of items such as American decorative arts and crafts. It features several works of art made from a variety of materials such as clay, glass, metal, fiber, and wood. The Grand Salon one of the stunning and lavish portions of the gallery stretches across 4300 square feet. It holds many of the prominent paintings displayed in salon style. Besides the large collection of paintings, there are several other objects of interest housed in the gallery made from ceramics, fabrics, stone, jewelry, and furniture.
